Why does my insurance premium keep increasing as I get older?

I had my first licence when I was 17 and have now reached 84 and have been a full time driver all my life with no insurance claims. Yet my premium increases by almost £100 per year. I used a comparison site and put my age at 44 and then got a quote did the same for my correct age of 84 and there was an increase of over £100. Surely this is age discrimination?

I believe it is discrimination. Insurers will argue that, based on statistics, there is a much higher probability you will have an accident over the age of 75, than there is under it. It is clear that your reactions will not be as quick and your eyesight might not be as good. All of these are an increased risk to insurers. The flip side is that senior's drive minuscule amounts of mileage in comparison to anyone else and statistically, that should decrease the risk. It used to be that based on gender, women were perceived by insurers as being a lower risk than men, the equalities act was tested in the EU courts and challenged insurers on this gender bias and succeeded. Women now no longer benefit from lower premiums than what a man would obtain. Insurers do now have to provide a credible up to date resource to prove that older people are a higher risk.
