It depends on the kind of driving you do. If you cover high miles with a lot of motorway driving, you're likely to save money with a diesel. If your mileage is lower or you do a lot of urban driving, the fuel economy savings will be balanced out by the higher purchase price of a diesel and the increased maintenance costs.
