Doing it in private

Regarding the email from MU in Saturday's HJ column, what is a "private dealer" please? I thought private car sales are exempt
from consumer rights protection.

A misuse of words by the reader. He meant a trader working from home, against whom buyers have the same rights as against a dealer with a big, shiny showroom.
