Surprice surprice

Is it just my imagination – or are used prices really firming up? I’ve been keeping an eye on Skoda Roomsters with a mind to purchase when my funds are high enough. My target was to get a low mileage 1.9 diesel PD3 for £8,000 – but prices seem to have lifted by £500 to £1,000. Do you think that there has been a conscious move by the Skoda group of dealers to raise prices across the board, or is it just supply and demand: fewer new cars sold and consequently more purchases of low-mileage 2nd hand vehicles?

Demand exceeding supply in the used market led to price increases between £50 and £600 from March tom April, and with new car sales fallen from 2.4 million to 1.6 million the situation can only get worse, obviously up to a point where it makes more sense to buy new. In 3 years time, assuming the economy picks up again, there will be a severe shortage of 3-year-old cars.
