KIA Cee'd tyre problem

I have a 2009 KIA Cee'd 2.0litre diesel with 17” alloy wheels.

It has done a little less than 17,000 miles from new. I have a couple of problems that I would like your opinion on.

The car was fitted with Michelin 225/45 R17 91W tyres and the front ones need replacing. KIA tell me they are soft tyres and wear quickly (the rear tyres are fine).

I have seen a road test on the net which scrubbed the front tyres at 14,600 miles. KIA told me to put ‘harder’ tyres on. I’m wondering which tyres you would advise for improved wear and improved fuel consumption?

I bought the 2-litre as I tow a caravan. I’m wondering if it would be an advantage to replace the alloys with 15” steel wheels and tyres? These would be 195/65 R15. The idea is that I'd not not notice the potholes as much as I do with the 17" alloys, but am concerned that it may affect the handling. I 'd have to inform the insurance of the change I presume?

Better to replace the 17s with 15s and probably 195.65 R15 Michelin Energy Saver tyres. Will hugely improve the ride comfort.
