I need off road tyres

I own a 2006 Nissan X-Trail.

The tread on my tyres is quite low and I would like to buy some new tyres that can cope with more off-roading than the original equipment tyres. I live outside the UK and I can't get any of the right kind of tyre in the correct size (215/65 R 16). Would it be a bad idea to use tyres of a different, but similar, size?

Another reader had good experience of Goodyear Wranglers on this car. Generally I like Pirelli Scorpoins.
