Best route from Longleat near Bath to Glasgow at Friday teatime

Can anyone advise the best route from Longleat to Glasgow leaving at Friday teatime. I will have a 3 year old in the car so don't want to end up sitting in traffic for hours. Would it be better to head somewhere for dinner and leave nearer 7 or will the roads still be really busy then? Any advice much appreciated.

This is a potential nightmare journey through Birmingham, so any indiction of a jam there best to take the long way round using the M42 and M6 toll. Then, of course, you will still be driving in weekend getaway traffic further North. Tebay services just past junction38 of the M6 is the nicest service area in the whole country, so good to stop there.
