4x4 or family car?

I need to change car to accommodate for bigger family now and more storage but not sure whether to go for a 4x4 or fit winter tyres to a family car.

I lived in Edinburgh and the snow was severe here last year. I couldnt get out at all!

Which family car do you recommend which will perform well in winter also?
Which 4x4 is a good family car for 3 kids?

I rate the BMW F25 X3 as the best mid size 4WD SUV. We drove one through the snow from Innsbruck to Farnborough last year on Prielli Sotto Zero winter tyres: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/bmw/bmw-x3-f25//
