1999 HDi black smoke on revving
I have a Peugeot 406 HDi 1999 (90bhp). . It has failed its exhaust emmissions test 4.7 showing and it needs to be below 3.0. There was a lot of black smoke when the car was revved the MOT tester was good enough to show me. I had not noticed it before myself as i tend to drive the car conservatively keeping it at low revvs. Could this be the EGR valve or would this show other symptoms.. PS should i have posted this on the backroom tech matters area

Might just be soot in the exhaust system. Get a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. Fill up with Shell V-Power diesel or BP Ultimate diesel. Take the car for at least a 50 mile drive giving it some revs (hold it in 3rd or 4th if necessary). Then re-present it at the MoT testing station hot. You might be lucky.
