1995 suzuki vitara automatic problem

My wife's 1995 Suzuki Vitara automatic diesel is playing her up.

When she puts it in drive it'll auto change to 1st & 2nd gears ok, but then it'll stay in 2nd gear and won't change up to 3rd / 4th.

Then, every now and then it'll change to 3rd. When she slows down it'll come down the gears back to 1st but when she pulls away again it won`t reach 3rd / 4th.

A mobile mechanic disconnected the O/D sensor because that light on the dashboard display was flickering and he said this would cure the problem but it hasn't.

This guy quoted her between £1200 - £1500 to fix the problem that's if he can find the fault.

Reads like a failed servo valve in the transmission valve block. Get it to a member of www.fedauto.co.uk. But at the sort of price you have been quoted, it isn't worth repairing because that's more than the car is worth.
