Signal failures
What is the correct way to acknowledge the kindness of other drivers, for example if they stop to let you through? During daylight hours I have seen or heard the vehicle's horn, a raised hand, a finger off the wheel, a quick flash of the headlights, even use of emergency lights, all of which could be construed as being unsafe or illegal. And what should be done at night-time, if anything at all?

A wave of the hand, or hazards briefly flashed. A motorcyclist thanks you by sticking out his right boot, and I hope he will have occasion to. On a motorway, the most unambiguous way to invite a vehicle ahead to pull out in front of you is to signal left.
