Can you recommend an economical first car with cheap insurance for a 23-year-old?

I'm a 23-year-old female, just about to graduate from university. I passed my driving test in 2010, and am looking for my first car. I need one that's as cheap as possible to insure and reliable. I will mainly be driving within the city to work, but I will be driving on the motorway at weekends. I'm not sure whether to go for a new or secondhand car. I'd be grateful for any advice you can give me.

In June when you wrote, the best bargain out there was a Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic at £6,995 with £20 tax, 50mpg and a 5-year warranty. This offer may have ended by publication date, or been extended. The new KIA Picanto 1.0 is prettier and VED free, for a bit more money.
