Wint some, lose some

Your response to SK lacked any mention of the fitting of winter tyres. We live in a hilly area and were able to use a VW Golf fitted with winter tyres in conditions that prevented the use of the car with conventional tyres.

I have been banging on about winter tyres for three years. I have my own set of Michelin Alpins waiting in my lock-up until the end of October. But SK asked a specific question about four wheel drive and I answered it. I cannot cover everything in every single answer. In terms of effectiveness in winter, best to worst are: 4WD with winter tyres; 2WD with winter tyres; 4WD with summer tyres; 2WD with summer tyres.
