The inspection pits

I took our shopping car for its MoT, yesterday. I have been using the same local garage for years, and I was taken aback when the owner told me that he was stopping doing MoT tests because of the number of rival garages cutting their prices. The owner said that a lot of MAA, members were considering a mass revolt against the government, because of the price-cutting, and he was finding it hard to make a decent profit from MoT testing.

Also, he was less than pleased with the EU, because they are going to increase the length of time, from three years, to five years for new cars. Surely it’s not the business of the government to fix the prices of the MoT, so that garages, can be guaranteed a good living? Apparently, some fast fit places are doing the Mo for £35.00, as opposed to the normal £55.00. This was the last straw for my local garage and he has lost a lot of business over the price cut.

Anyone with any sense realises that cut price MoTs are loss leaders to bring work into the places offering them. Very dodgy indeed. The MoT inspector can condemn a set of brake discs then the same garage profits from fitting a new set.
