Back to front

A few weeks ago a correspondent wrote saying he was replacing a couple of tyres on his car and was moving the front wheels to the rear axle and having the new tyres fitted on the wheels at the front.

It has been recommended by the tyre manufacturers that the best tyres should be fitted to the rear axle whether to car is front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, four wheel drive or even a commercial vehicle. Apparently the tyre manufactures have been trying to get this message across for the last twenty or thirty years. Perhaps you would like to clarify this point.

That is what I have been advising for the past 5 years or so, following Tyre Safety Council advice. The reason is stability when braking hard in the wet. Mike Brewer demonstrated what could happen on TV in a Corsa with worn rear tyres.
