I was invited by Benfields VW of Dumfries to a ‘Free Vehicle Safety Check’, on 15th July. The check took about ½ hour, and I was advised that both rear parking brake motors required replacement at a cost of £669.94. My car is a 2005/55 VW Passat mileage 48,800. I appealed to VW Customer Care department in Milton Keynes, and after asking if this could be either a design or manufacturing fault, they offered a 20% goodwill reduction, which I accepted. Since then I have found the fault to be common and I ask if you can establish if this repair should be treated in the ‘recall’ category. Both the local VW Garage and VW Customer Care Department are non-committal and a bit tight lipped.

More info at www.vwvortex.com Automatic release of parking brake can be temperamental, sometimes refuses to release because rear pads have corroded to discs. The other reason for failure is water ingress to the electric power brake motors in the callipers. Replacement rear brake callipers are £203 and require two hours labour to fit.” But this is a common complaint of most models fitted with electric parking brakes including some Ford C-Max and some Renault Scenics and late Jaguar S Types.
