VW Golf 2-00 TDI new purchase August 2009 - Cause of water ingress to driver footwell?

Excellent car with no problems until just prior to expiry of 3 year warranty, I found standing water in driver footwell following long round trip Bristol to East Anglia and back. There was one day on which very heavy rain and lots of standing water.

On 3 year serviced they were unable to find cause - I elected to see if it was one off incident rather than put in for 3 day "leak test". Following return from trip to Yorkshire 2 days ago - water ingress to driver footwell as re occured.

Is this a leak in floor - or as someone has suggested possible a leak from air con?

Your comments would be much appreciated. I am booked in with VW garage for water leak test

Sack your garage because the people there are are stupid, especially if it's a VW dealer. This leak is well known in RHD examples of all VAG Golf class cars. It could be due to the drains from the bulkhead vent well becoming blocked. But is more likely to be due to a badly refitted or cracked pollen filter cover, especially if the filter was replaced in a service. It's extremely fiddly and time consuming to remove the cover and put it back properly, so a fitter working to a time limit won't have bothered. Needless to say I discovered this after having one of these cars dealer serviced.
