What is a safe small car?

My son was unfortunate to have an accident in his Mini One. We were impressed with the safety features of the Mini which enabled him to walk away from the accident.

On looking for a replacement car we are paranoid on safety features (number and position of airbags, side impact bars etc). Appreciate that most modern cars have a safety rating but wonder whether we are getting a safer car from say a VW Golf, Audi A3 or BMW 1 series over a Renault Clio Fiesta or similar.

Had an email from a couple who T-boned another car in their FIAT 500. All airbags deployed. They walked away. The people in the car that pulled out in front of them didn't. So he is probably safe in most current small cars with a 5 star NCAP rating. Here is Euro NCAP for Superminis:
