Door lock isn't locking...

I have a 2007 BMW 3 Series. I have a problem with the driver's door. When the weather is cold, the door will open with the key fob but will not latch closed. I have to engage the central locking to keep the door closed and then the door will not open so I have had to exit via the passenger door. When the weather warms up later in the day the door will open and close normally.

I sprayed some WD40 into the door lock but now the door requires two pulls on the door handle to open the door from the outside after being unlocked.

I guess the door mechanism becomes frozen but I was wondering if this can be prevented as I am concerned about the safety of driving a car and not being able to open the driver's door.

I would guess that moisture had got past the seal into the lock solenoid.
