What are your thoughts on rear wipers?

What is your opinion on the lack of a rear screen wiper on some modern cars? I am thinking of mainly upper range models, but even the Honda Civic lacks one. I consider that they are nearly as essential as front wipers in modern traffic conditions in the wet, especially on motorways. I know of someone who recently changed his Civic which he had had only a few months for just that reason, poor visibility out the back in wet weather.

The current model Civic does have a rear wiper (in answer to criticism of the previous one that didn't).

My car has patterning on the windscreen when wet - the wipers don't get rid of it. I assume it's from polish used by the car cleaners. Can you suggest anything to get rid of the patterns?
I have a Renault Clio MkII. The indicators and windscreen wipers start on their own. They also go at different speeds than they should.
