Can a car be used after failing an MoT test if the preceding certificate is still valid?
If a car is submitted early and fails the MoT test, can it be legally used until the current certificate expires?

No, because it has failed the test. It can be taken away and fixed and brought back for re-test, but it cannot be used. The failure is recorded on the national database accessible by any police officer so the unexpired certificate is meaningless.
