Are there any cheap alternatives to the AA?

My AA membership renewal has just arrived at double last years fee. I intend to cancel. Would you please recommend the best alternative?

One option is to get in touch and offer them what you paid them last year. They will probably accept. This is simply a private equity fund-run business tactic to boost revenue based on the premise that a percentage of people will simply pay up. Readers tell me the RAC operates the same way and so, now, do many car insurers.

I just had my AA renewal through and at £273 I think it’s a bit much (Roadside; Home start; Relay; breakdown repair cover). Who do you recommend these days?
