Will removing lorries from London's streets reduce the number of fatal accidents involving cyclists?

Many of you will have already heard the sad news that a Londoner was killed while riding his bike close to the Olympic Park. 28-year-old Daniel Harris died after being hit by a left-turning bus at a junction that LCC had warned the Olympic authorities and Transport for London posed a serious danger to cyclists. For the second year running, Londoner Daniel Barnes is raising money for our No More Lethal Lorries campaign in memory of his friend Dan Cox, killed by a left-turning lorry at Dalston Junction in 2010. With the help of LCC supporters, last year Daniel raised £7000 by riding through the Alps, and this year hopes to reach £10,000. We urge you to donate to his appeal to help reduce the danger to cyclists from large vehicles.

In the interests of fairness, there’s another side to this story. Today, at Guildford, a cyclist risked his life running a red light across three lanes of traffic that was turning left and right off the slip road from the A3. Rather than kill him, the drivers showed the common sense he obviously lacked and braked sharply. Had there been any bumper-to-bumper crashes as a result, he would have got clean away. Similarly, any cyclist who rides up to the left of a large vehicle where he can’t be seen puts himself in danger. Banning large trucks from city streets would mean banning food.
