What small load-lugger?
I currently drive a Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG hatchback. It has plenty of performance and the area behind the front seats is ideal for carrying quite bulky loads.
I am looking to change for a petrol auto with chain cam, good economy & roomy hatchback style for carrying stuff around.
The Honda Jazz 1.4CVT ES seems to fit the bill, but I have not yet had a test drive.
Will the performance and comfort on a long drive be adequate and what other vehicles should I be looking at? Must be automatics.

Yes, that's a sensible choice. You probably need an extended test drive to get comfortable with the CVT-7 and its paddleshifters. Sometimes better to paddleshift; sometimes not.
