What medium hatchback?

I have a £10k (maybe a bit more) inheritance to spend on a nearly new car. Reliability, & fuel efficiency are most important. Sportiness/decent handling would be good, but not essential.

Electric windows & mirrors are helpful. Looks, badge, image are least important. Basically looking for a bomb-proof hatch that will accommodate a drum kit.

I usually hang on to cars until they're ready to scrap or pass on to a relative, so depreciation is not a factor for me.

I like Civics, Velosters, and Mazda3s.

A Honda Civic 1.8i ES is good. Chain cam engine, capable of 45mpg on a run and cavernous inside. Haven't seen any Velosters for £10k. Mazda 3s strangely nicest with cooking 1.6 petrol engine.
