Buying a family friendly diesel estate for £6000

We are looking to buy a family diesel estate for around £6000. We are not rich people so reliability, practicality and fuel economy is very important; however, we do want prestige and all the things you get with the top of the range cars.

Is it better to go for a slightly older BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Or should we buy a lower mileage Peugeot 407, Mazda 6 or Ford Mondeo?
