Buying a new car for a young professional - what would you recommend?

I recently started a graduate level job after leaving university and I am looking to get a new (or used but within the last 5 years if possible) car to upgrade from my current Y-reg Vauxhall Corsa.
I tend to do a long (100 mile) motorway trip once-a-week and then occasional city driving around Birmingham. I want a medium sized car preferably not a saloon (as I plan to get a dog which will need a boot!) that will not be too much to insure and is appropriate for a young male.
I have up to £8000 to spend and would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

A Honda Jazz is the most dog friendly because the seats fold flat. A Mazda 2 is more fun. But you can now get a new Dacia Sandero 90TCe for £7,395.
