Which tyres are best for a Honda Civic?

I am currently running my Honda Civic 2.2EX on 225/45/17 Y rated tyres, which were fitted as standard. Given the occasional snowy periods over the past few winters, I wanted to replace them with something with more grip. However, as I plan to change the car over the next 12/18 months, I do not want to pay out for a second set of wheels and dedicated winter tyres.

I am therefore considering a set of all-weather tyres (probably Goodyears) but can only find availability on V rated tyres. The owners handbook indicates that to facilitate the use of snow chains, the standard 225 wheels/tyres may be replaced with "optional" 205/55/16 V rated tyres.

Given that the smaller V rated tyres were supplied on lower specified models (e.g. ES/SE models) and indeed may be fitted to the EX model, is there any reason why I shouldn't fit V rated 225 tyres to the existing rims?

Yes. You can't put 16-inch tyres on 17-inch rims. On the rims you have you can only replace the tyres with 225/45 R17s.
