MINI suffering from gearbox problems

While driving my MINI the other day, I noticed it started jolting violently. The garage did a diagnostic investigation and said that the gearbox control wasn't controlling the gears properly (either too slow or too fast) hence the stutter. They also said that this was quite common on Minis. They made the drive smoother for the moment, but said that they cannot cure the problem and it may occur again in the future.

Not a regular problem: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mini/cooper-r50-2001...d But this is a CVT automatic and unless the transmission fluid has been changed regularly it will suffer age related faults.
