Best used small car for £6k?

My sister currently has a 2006 Fiat Punto 1.3 diesel that is getting a little unreliable and costly to run. She covers 12,000 miles a year and would like to replace the car with £6000 to spend. Which vehicles should she consider for reliability, low running costs and comfort?

A Fiat 500 is much better built than the Punto and is worth considering, but avoid the 500 diesel. A Toyota Yaris 1.4D-4D would be a direct replacement.
