Uneven Rear Brake Wear on a MINI - what to do?
My wife's MINI display console indicated worn rear brakes recently. I had a look, as did a neighbour who is a garage mechanic, and the pads looked good as new. As a result we contacted the dealer (it is a lease car) who said it was probably a software fault and to take the car in to fix. To ease matters they agreed to collect the car themselves.
The garage telephoned to say the rear brakes were worn "metal to metal" and needed new discs and pads or they would declare it unroadworthy. The bill was nearly £300. We asked for the parts removed to be returned with the car, which they did.
On both sides at the rear the outboard pads are almost unworn but the inboard pads have worn to the metal. What could have caused this uneven wear to occur? Is it likely to be a fault with the calipers, and if so do we have a claim against BMW MINI for the cost of the replacement discs and pads?

Dirty calliper pins failing to allow the pads to clamp evenly on the discs, so more a maintenance issue than a manufacturing fault issue.
