Be careful when paying for insurance for a friend.

In November 2011 I assisted an elderly widow friend of mine to source car insurance on the internet. After a search we settled on Saga Motor Insurance. I paid with my Mastercard to simplify matters and was reimbursed by the insured lady. So far, so good. Wind on 12 months and we decided to change her provider from Saga to Axa. In November 2012 I noticed £885 taken from my Mastercard account by Saga without any reference to me because Saga had assumed she would renew with them. It is now Jan 4 2013 and after many phone calls and letters/emails to Saga they have agreed to reimburse the £885 - not to me – but to the insured lady who is now with Axa. So by assisting a friend I lost £885 for two months to Saga.

Many thanks. This is a necessary warning to anyone else thinking of doing such a thing. Another situation you could find yourself in as a good Samaritan is giving crash victims shelter in your car then having the fire brigade cut the roof off to "safely" extract them, minimising the risk of spinal injury.
