Why are fixed towbars still in use?

What are your thoughts on the menace of towbars? Now that easily detachable towbars are available for most vehicles should it not be made compulsory to remove them when not in use, saving on the vicious damage they can inflict to both other vehicles and ones ankles.

Absolutely agree. I've had thousands of pounds worth of damage done to sale cars by idiots in 4x4s with fixed towbars reversing into them.
