Why does my insurance company require my V5C two years running?

Last year I received a letter from my insurer threatening to cancel my policy if I failed to send them a copy of my V5C within seven days. I complied and asked for a confirmation. I did not get any further correspondence. However, this year I got a similar letter and failed to reply within the time. Very quickly I was told of the cancellation and I immediately phoned and since then I have spent a great deal of time recovering my insurance cover. My policy runs until October. Are you aware of this procedure?

They want it to make sure that you are the registered keeper of the car, which you might not be if you bought it via a broker who pre-registered it to someone else. But to ask for the V5C two years running seems nuts to me. And a breach of contract or "utmost good faith" because if they had your V5C from last year it would not have changed at all.
