How can I contact the owner of a car I scraped?

Please advise if it is possible to find the owner of a vehicle. Unfortunately I scraped a parked and empty car whilst parking and wish to admit blame. When I returned to try and find the owner the car had gone. I have the car's number plate.

Strictly speaking you should have reported it to the police within 24 hours. As it is, you can use 'just cause' to obtain the keeper's details from the DVLA: www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla
