What's causing a harsh ride in my Hyundai Getz?

I have a 58-reg Hyundai Getz 1.4 which has a very harsh ride. My wife has a Getz 1.1 and the ride is acceptable. I have spoken to the Hyundai selling agent who say there should be no difference, although I have not yet had it checked over. A tyre distributor says it would not be the tyres. All four wheels seem to be affected. The front wheels need rebalancing every few thousand miles. It is a nice little car but the ride lets it down badly.

If the tyres and wheels are a different size this could affect the ride quality, so check to see if they are the same or not. The only other factor would be the suspension but this should be standard across all Hyundai models. To be sure it may be worth contacting the main Hyundai customer services dept to find out if your car has firmer suspension.

A relative owns a 2009 Volkswagen Polo with an 'auto' box. At just 8,000 miles all four tyres are worn to such an extent as to need replacing. Most of the mileage has been on motorways. Any ideas?
