Having problems connecting my caravan to my car

I hooked our 2003 Volkswagen Passat up to a caravan today and the break lights immediately stopped working. The ABS and ESP warning lights came on and the glow plug light started flashing too, is this connected to hooking up the caravan or just coincidence?

By 'hooking up' I guess you mean 'hooking up' the caravan electrics, in which case there must be a wiring fault.
