Which 4x4 offers low running costs, good reliability and can tow 2500kg?

I am looking to buy an older 4x4 for towing horses. I have owned a number and understand the pitfalls, however cannot seem to find one that is cheapish to run, reliable and can tow 2500kg. Any suggestions?

You're probably aware of the obvious ones so you no doubt know most of these, but we'd suggest the likes of the Mitsubishi Shogun, Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol. We'd avoid older Land Rover Discovery models as they're not great in terms of reliability. Of course, the Land Rover Defender is always ideal for towing, even though it's not much in the way of comfort or refinement.
