First car for 18 yr old - lease new or buy?

My 18 year old son has just passed his driving test and is looking to purchase his first car. Likes the idea of new, something like a Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost. What are his best options, to buy or lease? Would a better alternative be to purchase second hand?
