Best used small car for £5000?

I am looking to buy a used small car for around £5000 that will last me for some years to come. I would like the best value for money and would be much more interested in reliability, fuel efficiency, low insurance costs and tax rather than features, driving experience or stylishness.

I would be very grateful if you could suggest some suitable models.

Another reader today had the Mitsubishi Colt on his list. A Colt 1.5 diesel would make a lot of sense. So would a previous model KIA Rio 1.5 diesel. Neither have diesel particulate filters to worry about.
