Personalised numberplate lost after accident in France
Whilst on holiday in France in July of this year, my Jeep was hit by an 80 year old Frenchman who failed to stop at a cross roads. The insurance company decided that it wasn’t worth repairing and declared the vehicle a category A write-off, meaning it could not be brought back to the UK.
I expressed concern about transferring the personalised number as there was no engineer’s report and the car would just be dumped in France, but was advised there would be no problem getting the DVLA to transfer it.
Since then the DVLA have said as they cannot inspect the car and there is no engineer’s report then the number cannot be transferred. The insurance company now say it’s nothing to do with them.
Please warn your readers/followers that you will lose a highly expensive personalised number in these circumstances and the insurance company say that the number is not covered by insurance!

Yes, I knew that, but it's still worth reminding readers. You never actually 'own' a personal reg. You lease it on the DVLA's fairly onerous terms. Had the DVLA never been told that the car had been written off, you might have got away with it. You can insure against virtually anything and it may be worth people's while to insure agains this eventuality on an 'agreed value' basis.

I currently have a four-digit registration plate. What is the process to retain it in the family should I die. My son has the same initials as me and in that event, I would like it to pass over to him....
I bought a registration from the DVLA 12 years ago and then went overseas and didn’t pay retention fees. How can I go about getting the number back from DVLA? They seem very uncooperative.
I've found a 2012 car from a dealer with a number plate that is unrecognised on all the relevant websites. Might that be a cause for concern?
