Need a premium compact diesel auto for £8k

I have a 2004 Mini One auto with a gearbox issue that isn't viable to repair. So I am looking to scrap it and buy a used small car or compact SUV. I have £8000 to spend quite like the BMW 3 Series. What do you suggest?
