Are automatic gearboxes reliable?
I get the impression your not a particular fan of these systems. Is it due to reliability problems?

Not a fan of DSGs and s-tronics, no. Partly because you cannot take full control over them, partly because of hesitation when accelerating out of side roads or onto roundabouts and partly because of the unreliability of the seven-speed dry clutch versions fitted to 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines and 1.6 diesels.
