Bought a faulty reconditioned engine - what are my rights?

I bought a reconditioned engine last week from a specialist supplier. However, after my local mechanic fitted the engine, it was diagnosed with a leaking head gasket.

The engine supplier is offering to fix this but I have to get the car to them (95 miles away), and they say they will try to commence the work within 2 weeks of receiving the car. They refuse to provide or pay for a hire car or commit to how quickly the work will be done.

Given their failure to deliver the engine on time and their lack of responsiveness I am inclined to get my local mechanic to repair the head gasket which will take a few days. Can I get the engine supplier to pay for this? They say I have no other option but to accept their offer.

I think the engine supplier is right. Always the wrong thing to do to supply a part to a garage and get the garage to fit it. Had the garage supplied the engine as well as fitted it then the remedy would have been straightforward. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
