Why did rainwater leak into the footwells of my 2002 Volkswagen Passat?

We have owned our 2002 Volkswagen Passat since new. Following a heavy downpour with a driving sideways wind, I got in the car the next morning to find the drivers footwell waterlogged, as was the back passenger footwell. From using the car the day before when it was dry, it had been parked overnight so was puzzled to understand how could the car be so waterlogged. Do you have any ideas please? No windows had been left open and no other part of the car was wet other than both footwells.

The waterproof membranes inside the doors have failed. Old VAG problem.
