Mini Cooper D looses all power at high revs

I have 2008 Mini Cooper D. I do not usually drive hard but on 2 occasions now after running at low speeds waiting to overtake and then using full throttle to accelerate, the engine management light comes on and the vehicle looses total power although the engine does not stop. After switching off and then back on again all appears to be normal. I did replicate this problem today by accelerating to 4000 revs up hill. Is it a fuel filter problem ?

At this stage it may be prudent to have a diagnostic check carried out, as this should then show a fault code ( ie P ---- 4 numbers) which can then be related to the fault. Better this than trying to identify what the problem may be ,which may cost in the long run.
