SLK won't change gear - what's the fault?

My wife's Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 occasionally refuses to change up into 4th gear and yet the next time it is used it works fine. Any ideas what's wrong?

Lazy servo valves in the valve block, or may be that the transmission oil needs changing.
