Tyre noise

I have owned a 57 plate Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro for seven years. The first few years I replaced all four tyres regularly with Pirrelli P Zero. The price became too much so switched to Avons ZZ5. The car now has a humming sound that gets faster as the car speeds up. The sound is pretty loud and annoying and appears to come from the rear of the car. Could this be down to inconsistency with tyre wear on rear tyres ?

Yes. It's because the rear tyres are 2/3 worn and wide, low profile tyres get considerably noisier then because more of their surface area is in continual contact with the road surface. The winter limit for tyres is actually 3mm, not the 1.6mm UK legal limit.
