Seat Leon DPF problems

I own a SEAT Ibiza ST, which I bought new in 2010. After about a year of owneship the DPF light started coming on, requiring me to take the car for a run in third gear on the motorway for about 20 miles. After another 18 months the car just goes straight into " limp mode ". I am tired of taking this car into the garage to have it reset. Can you help?

Presumably it is a 1.6TDI that is one of the 'dieselgate' models due for recall this year. This engine has a history of problems, especially gumming up its Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. It is not suitable for repeated short runs from cold.
