I am looking for a used Mazda MX-5 but am baffled by the huge choice of models, engines and prices. Which model is best?

MX-5 2.0i Sport six-speed much better and better equipped than the 1.8. Avoid Mk II 1.6s. They were ridiculously slow for a sports car.
